چکیده

We examine the excitation of inviscid stationary cross ow instabilities near an isolated surface hump (or indentation) underneath a three-dimensional boundary layer. As the hump height (or indentation depth) is increased from zero, the receptivity process becomes nonlinear even before the stability characteristics of the boundary layer are modi ed to a signi cant extent. This behavior contrasts sharply with earlier ndings on the excitation of the lower branch Tollmien-Schlichting modes and is attributed to the inviscid nature of the cross ow modes, which leads to a decoupling between the regions of receptivity and stability. As a result of this decoupling, similarity transformations exist that allow the nonlinear receptivity of a general three-dimensional boundary layer to be studied with a set of canonical solutions to the viscous sublayer equations. The parametric study suggests that the receptivity is likely to become nonlinear even before the hump height becomes large enough for ow reversal to occur in the canonical solution. We also nd that the receptivity to surface humps increases more rapidly as the hump height increases than is predicted by linear theory. On the other hand, receptivity near surface indentations is generally smaller in comparison with the linear approximation. Extension of the work to cross ow receptivity in compressible boundary layers and to Gortler vortex excitation is also discussed. Effect of Square Rod Aspect Ratio on Vortex Shedding Downstream the Rod and Heat Transfer Enhancement from the Neighboring Flat Plate

A rectangular rod is placed in a flow field flowing parallel to a flat plate. Effect of chord-thickness ratio of rectangular rod on developing vortex shedding downstream to the rod is studied. Then, for each one of the aspect ratios, the distance of the rod from the neighboring flat plate is reduced until the rod sticks to the flat plate. In each case, the effect of the flat plate boundary laye...

Equilibrium Vortex Configurations in Domains with Boundary

Given a stable configuration of point vortices for steady two-dimensional inviscid, incompressible fluid flow in a domain D, it is shown that there is another stable configuration of stationary vortices in D with vortices near the original vortices plus additional vortices near any points on the boundary where the speed of the original flow is a nonzero relative minimum.

Calculations of Unsteady Flow and Flutter by an Euler and Integral Boundary-Layer Method on Cartesian Grids

This paper presents an Euler and boundary-layer method capable of unsteady flow and aeroelastic simulations. An integral boundary-layer solver is coupled with an Euler solver in a “semi-inverse” manner. For the inviscid part, approximate wall boundaryconditions are implemented on non-moving mean chord positions, whereas the full nonlinear Euler equation is solved in the field for accurate resol...

Nonparallel spatial stability of the boundary layer induced by Long's vortex on a solid plane perpendicular to its axis.

We consider the linear, viscous stability of the boundary layer induced by an unbounded vortex whose outer inviscid structure coincides near the axis with Long's vortex. The viscous boundary layer induced by the interaction of such a vortex with a solid plane perpendicular to the axis has a known self-similar structure. The spatial stability of this self-similar solution is analyzed here for ax...
